Armed opposition factions have overrun a military base in the western countryside of Hama province after heavy clashes with Syrian regime troops, a field activist told Zaman al-Wasl Tuesday.
Rebel fighters seized Tal Othman base and the nearby village of Janabra, activist Mustafa Abu Arab said. The strategic hill was the Assad regime's first line of defense in securing loyalist villages in the Ghab Plain.
Activists also reported fierce fighting near the town of Morek as the regime extended its air strikes on the rebel-held villages of Latamneh, Latmin and Lahaya.
In northern Syria, at least 12 civilians were killed in Russian air strikes that targeted rebel-held neighborhoods of Bustan al Qasr and Mashhad, Aleppo city, a local reporter said Tuesday.
Russia's air force has flown 1,631 sorties and struck 2,084 militant targets since the start of its aerial campaign in Syria, Russian news agencies cited the defense ministry as saying Tuesday.
At least 200,000 people have been displaced since early October in Aleppo, Homs, Hama and Idleb, the United Nations said on Monday.
