NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said establishing a “buffer zone” in northern Syria, as proposed by Turkey, is not being discussed by NATO member states.
Turkey, which has been providing unlimited support for terrorist organizations operating in its southern neighbor over the three and a half years of the crisis, has recently been pushing for imposing a “buffer zone” along its border with Syria.
Speaking to journalists following talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in the Turkish capital Ankara, Stoltenberg said the issue of creating a “buffer zone” in Syria “has not been on the table of any NATO discussions yet.”
This, he added, “is not an issue which is discussed in NATO.”
Meanwhile, the White House denied on Wednesday reports that establishing a buffer zone on Syria’s northern border with Turkey is being discussed.
“It’s not something that is under consideration right now," said President Barack Obama’s spokesman Josh Earnest, putting an end to the provocative statements made by some Western top diplomats on this regard.
