Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem received Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) Sergio Piazzi and an accompanying delegation for talks on Wednesday.
Discussions focused on the situation in the region and the terrorist threats to which Syria has been exposed for over four years, with Muallem stressing the need to combat this terrorism, backed by regional and international states that fund, train, and support terrorists and facilitate their infiltration of Syrian territory. The foreign minister also noted that recent events in Idleb and Jisr al-Shughour have exposed Turkey’s involvement in supporting terrorists in Syria.
Muallem stressed that terrorism poses a threat to all countries of the world, and combating it requires honest cooperation from all sides.
Piazzi affirmed that PAM is prepared to cooperate with Syria in the field of counterterrorism, claiming the Assembly is moving to combat terrorism through Security Council resolutions, the contents of which it aims to integrate into European legislation.
The secretary general said the Assembly is also working within the framework of the UN and European organizations to establish a clear understanding of events in the region.
