The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the US has started to realize that opposing the efforts exerted by the guarantor states of the Astana process (Russia, Iran and Turkey) in Syria harms the interests of the US itself.
Russia Today quoted Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova in televised statements as saying that, ” The US in its keenness on shedding light on its role has always shown its opposition of the joint initiatives of the three states, as it has focused its efforts on undermining Astana format.”
“The truth is that we have achieved great progress and the whole world watched that yesterday, therefore, continuing to hinder the work of Astana guarantor states means working against itself, and the US started to realize that,” Zakharova added.
Commenting on the US decision to withdraw from Syria, Zakharova said “A story which might evolve from this decision is a real prospect for a political solution.”
She expressed Moscow’s conviction that the US decision will positively affect the forming of a committee to discuss the constitution and the situation in al-Tanf.”
“Moscow wants to understand what the US means by the new phase of the campaign in Syria, which was announced by the White House after the withdrawal of US forces,” Zakharova said.
She added “I want to understand what is expected in the new stage of the campaign and that what happened, for example in Afghanistan, will not happen as they completely withdrew their forces and they redeployed them in the subsequent following years.”
