Islamic State (ISIS) fighters on Monday withdrew from their last stronghold near Kobani in the eastern countryside of Aleppo after fierce fighting with Free Syria Army (FSA) forces and Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), according to Zaman al-Wasl.
The radical Sunni group dubbed its withdrawal from the town of Serrin east of Kobani (Ayn al-Arab) as a tactical retreat, with the group heading in the direction of Sad Tishreen and al-Najem citadel area near the Turkish border.
The latest FSA and YPG victory follows a barrage of US-led airstrikes that have been pounding ISIS positions since August 2014.
The capture of Serrin comes five months after Kurdish fighters and moderate rebels seized control of Kobani, following four months of deadly fighting and massive destruction.
