Al-Jaafari: Some States Seek Political Vacuum in Syria

Syria's Permanent Representative to the U.N., Bashar al-Jaafari, said on Wednesday that Lakhdar Brahimi submitted his resignation from his post as a U.N. envoy and it is premature to talk about his successor.

At a press conference, Jaafari said that "many mistakes were committed during Brahimi's term, including his interference in Syria's internal affairs, for a mediator does not interfere in sovereign affairs of any state."

Responding to statements from the French Foreign Minister, Jaafari said the comments were irresponsible and that they push towards the use of force instead of resorting to the U.N. Charter and the principles of international law. He said that France is part of the problem but not part of a solution, and described the French policy towards Libya, Egypt and Syria as reckless.

Jaafari referred to the mistakes committed by the U.S. administration, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey towards the Syrian people, stressing that large numbers of terrorists came from Europe to Syria through the Turkish borders.

"The geopolitics has changed thanks to the steadfastness of the Syrian people in the face of all the pressures of regional and international forces," Jaafari said.
