On Monday, the President of the Syrian Coalition Abdurrahman Mustafa welcomed the start of the implementation of the Idleb agreement, including the establishment of a demilitarized zone through the withdrawal of heavy weapons by all sides. He described the move as an important step that will have a positive effect on the humanitarian situation in Idleb.
Mustafa said that the implementation of the agreement by FSA groups will spare the region the dangers of a possible bombardment by the Assad regime and its allied terrorist Iranian groups. He stressed that the implementation of the agreement means that the Assad regime’s attempts to take control of Idleb have failed as it will not be allowed to enter the demilitarized zone. He cited Turkey’s strengthening of its observation posts and the full preparedness of the FSA groups.
Mustafa pointed out that the area covered by the agreement will receive better services in the coming days and will see a decreased armed presence. He said: “With the Turkish, we are trying to work out a plan to strengthen the civil administration and restart the work of service institutions which the Assad regime destroyed over the past several years.”
Moreover, Mustafa pointed out that the implementation of the agreement will strengthen the position of the revolution. He stressed the need to open the way for the revitalization of the political process and the implementation of international resolutions on Syria, most importantly the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council resolution 2254.
Mustafa noted that the Assad regime and its allies are obstructing the political process and preventing the formation of the constitutional committee. He called on the United Nations to take bold positions to force the Assad regime to seriously engage in the political process.
