Opinion: Washington’s Destructive Regional Policy Will Backfire

The aggressive strategies employed by the U.S.-led coalition in Syria and Iraq are only working to turn locals against against it, Mehraz al-Ali writes

The United States is no longer hiding its destructive policy toward the countries and peoples of the region. What had been considered from its viewpoint as the mistaken targeting of civilians has today become a systematic policy. The destruction of service facilities for citizens in both Syria and Iraq, as well as the bombardment of hospitals, schools, water stores and bridges in Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor, all make fine witnesses to this aggressive strategy.

The American anti-terrorism policy is manifested in the bombardment of the active forces on the ground which are fighting terrorism both in words and deeds. This was demonstrated by the bombardment of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization forces on the Iraqi-Syrian border, which led to the death and injury of dozens of Iraqi fighters who were pursuing Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists, and further by the so-called coalition forces' bombardment of the Syrian army in Jabal al-Tharda and Al-Tanf. These acts confirm the direct coordination between this hostile coalition and the terrorist takfiri (hard-line Sunni) groups, with the internationally outlawed ISIS at their forefront.

When comparing the criminals of ISIS and those of the coalition forces, we find they match in their use of force to spread terror and kill citizens, and all that is related to civilization, but with one key difference: The international coalition has weapons with major destructive capabilities, and as such it is ahead of ISIS in its destructive power. Power which is used against all those fighting terrorism, as well as to destroy infrastructure in Syria and Iraq in the framework of its pre-planned policies of aggression in the region.

Washington’s policies toward the peoples of the region are increasing their hatred for the American administration, and they will respond to these policies, directly or indirectly, and derail its agenda. The coordination that occurred between Syria and Iraq and the meeting of the two armies at the border of these two countries was a powerful slapdown of Washington’s plans, derailing one of the most important parts of its agenda in setting up an area under its control straddling Iraq and Syria. Therefore, the coalition’s criminal and destructive acts will only make the two peoples stronger and more steadfast in the mission to uproot terrorism and derail these conspiratorial plans, foremost that of the United States of America.
