The death toll due to the coronavirus has increased in northern Syria, after new cases were recorded Monday.
The Epidemiological Surveillance Laboratory Network confirmed one death and 22 new coronavirus cases in northern Syria, bringing the total number to 20,867 cases and the number of deaths to 379.
On Monday, Dr. Hossam Karah Mohammad, the doctor in charge of the coronavirus file in the Idleb Health Directorate, said in a statement to SY 24 that, “there is no real decrease in the number of cases. The number of cases is still very large.”
He added, warning, “Unfortunately, all community isolation centers (CICs) no longer receive support, and this is not good, especially as we are expecting a second peak.”
He continued, “Most of the efforts made are to restore the shortage of isolation centers and to redistribute [centers] according to the respective needs of the regions. We have incoming support for the centers that were previously closed, so that we can cover the needs of the various regions.”
People in regime-controlled areas have been suffering from the deliberate neglect of the hospitals and medical authorities concerned with limiting the spread of the virus. The Ministry of Health announced nine deaths and 96 new cases, stating that the number of cases in the areas it controls had risen to 13,132, in addition to 841 deaths.
The Health Authority of the Autonomous Administration revealed that 23 new cases were recorded in the areas under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces, which raises the total number of cases to 8,363, while no new deaths were recorded, keeping the number at 284.
Save the Children International warned, at the beginning of this year, that the coronavirus pandemic is still out of control in Syria, highlighting the shortage of equipment necessary to prevent and limit the spread of the virus, especially in northern Syria.
The increase in coronavirus infections throughout Syria, which have reached more than 43,000 cases, coincides with the announcement by some countries, including Turkey and Russia, of the arrival of a vaccine and the start of vaccinations.
