The Syrian Network for Human Rights has said the establishment of a safe zone to protect Syrians from the Assad regime and attacks of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) will reduce the flow of Syrian migration to Europe.
In a report released earlier this week, the Network said the refugee crisis in Syria is one of the complexities resulting from the crimes against humanity and war crimes practiced by President Bashar al-Assad's regime since March 2011.
"Several armed groups later exercised similar crimes, but these crimes do not equal 10 percent of the total war crimes committed by the Syrian regime, according to documented human rights violations since March 2011," the Network said.
The Network said the international community's inability and unwillingness to reach a solution for the Syrian issue, in addition to the wasted opportunities from the UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, has left no option for the Syrian people except to escape to Europe. "The refugee issue has become a real concern for European countries, and we believe the safe zone, free from the aerial bombardment of Syrian air forces and the ISIS offensive, will lead to a decrease in the flow of refugees."
The Network added the creation of a safe area will help millions of Syrians, "and according to interviews conducted with refugees in neighboring Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, it appears the refugees would be willing to leave their country of asylum and move to the safe zone."
The Network called on the international community, and European countries in particular, to support the establishment of a safe zone for Syrians as soon as possible, in parallel with improving the conditions of refugees in neighboring countries, especially the areas of education, health, and employment.
