Rebel factions led by the Nusra Front recaptured two hills from regime troops and their allied militias in the southern countryside of Aleppo, activists said on Tuesday.
Opposition fighters took the hills of Baqara and Bunjaira, a move which may hinder regime efforts to control nearby strategic supply routes and ammunition depots.
The Syrian regime is hoping for a lucky break as they attempt to retake the northwestern province of Aleppo for the fourth time since the Syrian conflict started in March 2011.
With the help of Russian air strikes, the operation has enabled forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad to make some of their most significant gains, according to the UK-based IBTimes.
At least 200,000 people from Aleppo, Hama and Idleb have been displaced since early October, the United Nations said on Monday, quadrupling earlier estimates of 50,000.
