Inmates of Homs Central Prison on Tuesday halted attempts by police to storm their cells in an effort to end a two-month hunger strike, sources told Zaman al-Wasl.
In separate phone calls, two detainees confirmed that regime police, backed by allied militias, had tried to break into the prison late on Tuesday using tear gas after cutting off water and electricity supplies.
The main prison of central province of Homs has been overcrowded with opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, with most inmates possessing no official criminal record. Inmates have appealed to human rights advocates and organizations to intervene to end the suffering.
