Muallem Calls for Joint Efforts Against Terrorism During Meeting with Chinese Envoy

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem received Chinese special envoy for Syria Xie Xiaoyan on Wednesday for talks on bilateral relations and regional developments, specifically regarding combatting terrorism and a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Muallem also briefed Xie on the latest developments around the Syrian army’s fight against terrorist groups in the city of Aleppo, voicing confidence in its ability to succeed alongside efforts to meet the needs of Syrian citizens.

The minister also stressed the need for joint efforts from the international community to fight and eliminate terrorism, stressing that countries which support terrorism, chiefly Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, must be held to account for their actions.

Muallem also praised China for the close coordination between the two countries on the international stage, expressing his gratitude for China’s recent decision block Monday’s resolution in the United Nations Security Council that refused to call for the departure of militants from Aleppo’s eastern districts.

In turn, the Chinese envoy called for restoring security and stability to Syria, expressing hope that progress will be achieved, in order to reach a political solution through the resumption of dialogue between the Syrians. The envoy noted that China will continue to play a constructive role in the settlement of the crisis in Syria in coordination with the Syrian government.

Xie called for an “iron fist” approach against terrorist organizations without discrimination and wherever they are, explaining that “terrorism is a common enemy of mankind and it should not be exploited to forward special agendas.”
