More than one thousand Iraqi families have been accommodated in makeshift housing in the Malakia area in the north-eastern Hassakeh province after they were displaced due to attacks from the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization, the caretaker Minister of Social Affairs at said on Monday.
Thousands of families have fled Iraq following IS attacks since 2 August. Hundred of civilians are reported to have been killed or abducted by the terrorist organization.
“We urge the World Food Programme to increase relief aid allocated to Hassakeh through an airlift to fulfill the increasing needs of the Province,” said Social Affiars Minister Kinda al-Shammat.
A SANA reporter in Hassakeh said that large numbers of Iraqi families have come to the province bordering Iraq, adding they were sheltered in schools and that their basic needs are being supplied, with local residnets providing transportations to the escaping civilians across the Iraqi borders.
Roughly 700 tents have been set up in the Ain al-Khadra area of Malakia to this end.
