Damascus witnessed a significant event as President Bashar al-Assad and other high-ranking officials participated in the People’s Assembly elections for the 4th legislative term. At one of the polling stations in Damascus, President al-Assad cast his vote, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s democratic process.

Prime Minister Eng. Hussein Arnous also exercised his electoral right at the joint electoral center at the Cabinet and the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry. In a statement to journalists, Arnous emphasized the Syrian state’s unwavering respect for the constitution and constitutional entitlements. He highlighted that all electoral milestones have been met on time, even under challenging circumstances, from the first term in 2012 to the current fourth term. Arnous noted the significance of the People’s Assembly elections as an essential constitutional duty, expressing confidence in the newly elected council’s role in the reconstruction phase of modern Syria.

Foreign and Expatriates Minister Faisal al-Mekdad echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of the elections as a testament to the Syrian people’s faith in democracy. Mikdad underscored the critical role of the People’s Assembly, whose members represent the diverse segments of society and articulate their aspirations.

The electoral process commenced at 7:00 am today, with Syrians heading to the ballot boxes to select their representatives from 1516 candidates competing for 250 seats in the People’s Assembly. The elections are being conducted transparently, under the supervision of the Supreme Judicial Elections Committee, which oversees everything from nominations to the announcement of results.

With 8,151 ballot boxes available across Syrian cities, voting will continue until 7:00 pm. According to the General Elections’ Law, the Supreme Elections’ Committee may extend voting by up to five hours at certain polling stations if necessary. The Higher Supreme Judicial Committee for elections has ensured their readiness to support the electoral centers and meet all necessary requirements for a smooth election process.
