Competent Authorities in Daraa Thwart Attempt to Smuggle Narcotics to Jordan

Competent authorities in Daraa thwarted on Thursday an attempt to smuggle quantities of drugs toward Jordanian territory and arrested the smugglers.

“As a result of the monitoring and investigation operations and the cooperation of the citizens, an attempt to smuggle more than 40 kilograms of dug was thwarted after a clash with the smugglers close to the Jordanian border,” A source in the competent authorities stated, noting that “the smugglers were arrested, and their weapons were confiscated.”

The source added that the competent authorities “are intensively pursuing their tasks to combat all forms of trafficking and drug smuggling of all kinds.”

COMMENT FROM THE OBSERVER

Law enforcement agencies in the region and beyond accuse the Syrian government of sponsoring drug smuggling.

Earlier, the U.S. House of Representatives passed Rep. French Hill and Rep. Brendan Boyle’s BIPARTISAN bill, the Countering Assad’s Proliferation Trafficking and Garnering of Narcotics (CAPTAGON) Act.

Rep. Hill’s bill requires the federal government to develop an interagency strategy to disrupt and dismantle narcotics production and trafficking and affiliated networks linked to the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria.
