Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Mohammed Samer al-Khalil stressed the importance of Syrian-Emirati relations. Khalil congratulated the UAE on their great achievement in organizing and holding expo 2020 in parallel to the challenges faced due to COVID-19 pandemic.
On Monday and during his meeting with UAE’s Minister of Economy, Abdullah Tawq, at the UAE’s Ministry of Economy in Dubai, Khalil presented the latest Syrian economic laws. He especially stressed the recent investment law, which provides an appropriate investment environment and attractive benefits in the recovery and reconstruction phase. It also encourages investors to set up projects in all areas by providing them with the necessary facilities.
The importance of economic diversity was emphasized, which protects countries and immunizes them from the risks of focusing on a few sectors –including sectors that threaten their economic stability. The centrality of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) was also addressed since they make up the largest proportion of projects operating in the two countries. These projects are the main economic support.

They discussed reviving bilateral cooperation in all economic sectors and not only export and import cooperation. Focusing on investment cooperation and support for SMEs was stressed upon.
Minister Tawq expressed his happiness regarding the Syrian delegation’s visit, headed by Minister Khalil, and welcomed Syria’s participation in Expo 2020. Tawq stressed the UAE’s readiness to provide support to the Syrians by transferring the successful UAE experience in various economic sectors, especially in the SME field.
Notable economic topics of common interest, including the agreement to reconstitute and activate the Syrian-Emirati Businessmen Council, were also reviewed. This step aims at encouraging trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the two countries.
When the meeting ended, Minister Tawq accompanied Khalil on a tour of the Ministry of Economy’s most important departments, where those wishing to set up companies or inquire about the laws of the Economy economy are received in order to encourage investments in the UAE.
The importance of holding continuous meetings and exchanging visits between Syria and the UAE was highlighted.
The Minister of Economy also met with Lebanese Minister of Tourism Walid Nassar, Commissioner General of the China Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, and Vice President of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) Zhang Shenfeng.
