Opposition activists say military intelligence has arrested Ranim Khalil Maatouq, a 24-year-old fine arts student, and Jihan Amin, an advocate with the Syrian Commission To Defend Prisoners Of Conscience.
The activists said the two were arrested at their homes in Sahnaya, south of Damascus. The arrests are part of a campaign targetting peaceful activists engaged in humanitarian efforts in the city of Sahnaya, where a lot of displaced people now reside.
Maatouq is the daughter of the advocate Khalil Maatouq, who was kidnapped by Syrian authorities fifteen months ago. Since then nothing has been heard of him. Jihan, meawhile is a human rights defender who is not involved in politics.
The activist and human rights defender Anwar al-Bunni wrote on his Facebook page: "As part of efforts to fight the armed groups, the military intelligence have arrested our colleague and advocate Jihan Amin, a woman who dedicated herself for defending detainees."
"They also arrested Ranim Maatouq, the daughter of our detained colleague Khalil Maatouq, who was arrested fifteen months ago. The recent arrests go against the reunion of families process," Bunni added.
