A Syrian newborn boy has been detained by a Lebanese hospital after his displaced family was unable to pay the last $1,200 of medical expenses, activists said Saturday.
The family of Mohamed Issa al Kholi, who fled the central Syrian town of Krak des Chevaliers to the Lebanese city of Akkar, has been unable to secure the release of the child for over seven days, according to activists.
According to the family, UNHCR has covered 75 percent of the treatment costs and the Lebanese Islamic society has provided $1,000.
Kholi's case is not the first instance of abuse against Syrian refugees in Lebanese hospitals. In February, a Lebanese hospital held an infant 'captive' until his death as his family was unable to pay the expenses.
