The Russian Defense Ministry have announced that three Russian military servicemen were killed in Syria during a shootout with terrorists in late February.

According to the Ministry, at the end of February, three Russian military servicemen, who were returning by car after delivering humanitarian aid to one of the towns in Deir ez-Zor province, were caught in a militant ambush. “After a shootout the Russian military servicemen went missing,” the Defense Ministry said.

Work to discover the whereabouts of the Russian troops continued around the clock along with the Syrian security forces, the Ministry added.

“As a result of the special measures, the militants responsible for the attack on the servicemen’s vehicle have been identified and the deaths of three Russian servicemen have been confirmed”, the statement read.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, an armed group of 30 terrorists involved in the attack on the Russian servicemen in Syria have been eliminated.

The Federal Republic of Russia participates in the war against terrorism at the request of the Syrian Government and its support has contributed to inflicting heavy losses upon terrorist organizations.
