Why Did Khalid al-Mahamid Resign From the Negotiations Committee?

The Vice President of the Syrian High Negotiations Committee, Khalid al-Mahamid has submitted his resignation the day before the beginning of the committee’s periodic meeting in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

A prominent member in the National Coalition told Ana Press that Mahamid had submitted his resignation after a group from the National Coalition, the Coordination Committee, some military factions, and a section of the platform, as well as independent figures, agreed to withdraw confidence from him and vote to remove him.

The coalition member, who asked not to be named, added: “This decision came after confirming that Khalid al-Mahamid had cooperated with the intelligence agencies of the United Arab Emirates and Russia to freeze the work of some factions fighting in Daraa, taking advantage of UAE funds.”

Mahamid declined to comment on the issue in a phone call with Ana Press.

Pro-revolution activists had given Mahamid the nickname “Dufda’ Daraa” (the Daraa Frog) after the fall of Daraa’s cities into Assad regime hands and the reconciliations signed by the factions he backed.

Mahamid is from Umm al-Mayadin in Daraa, and got a secondary degree from Daraa al-Mahata, and then completed university studies at a medical school in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, graduating in 1988 with a specialty in obstetrics and gynecology.
