Parliament Approves Law for Child Fighters, Rape

The People's Assembly on Monday approved a draft law imposing penalties for the recruit of child fighters and rape.

The law adds two articles to the law of penalties issued under the legislative decree No.148 for 1949.

"The amendments added to this law are very important in light of terrorists' recruitment of children in fighting, bearing weapons, munitions and explosives," Minister of Justice Najm al-Din al-Ahmad told a parliament session led by Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham.

He said that the new amendments include toughening penalties to life imprisonment if child recruits became disabled, were raped, or given drugs.

The penalty could be execution if a child is found to have died.
