Assad Discussed Alawite State with Israel

Guardian newspaper claims Assad consulted Lieberman on displacement policy

Israeli sources refused to comment on the news published in the British Guardian newspaper and said that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad communicated indirectly with Israeli former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman.

According to the newspaper, Assad asked Lieberman, via a well known politician and intermediary, to prevent Israel from hindering his regime's attempt to establish an Alawite state in some parts of Syria.

The policy requires the mass displacement of non-Alawite inhabitants of these regions to the Golan Heights.

The Guardian said Lieberman has not refused the Syrian request, but first asked about the fate of pilot Ron Arad and the three soldiers missing since the battle of Sultan Jacob in Lebanon, as well as the grave of Mossad agent Eli Cohen in Damascus.
