Italy Will Not Support Military Action in Syria Outside U.N.

Italy will not support military action in Syria outside the U.N. Security Council, the Italian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

The Italian News Agency (AKI) quoted Italian Foreign Minister, Emma Bonino, during a briefing of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Chamber of Deputies and Senators, saying Italy's stance on the crisis in Syria had not changed.

"If we could reach consensus at the U.N. Security Council, we can [address the situation] in other ways, not necessarily the militarily" the Italian news agency AKI quoted Bonino as saying.

The minister rejected comparisons of the situation in Syria with Kosovo and Mali in terms of military intervention, stressing that the repercussions of any initiative outside the U.N. Security Council would be "extremely dangerous".
