The Foreign and Expatriates Ministry on Monday sent two identical letters to the Chairman of the U.N. Security Council and the U.N. Secretary-General on the attack launched earlier in the day by armed terrorist groups on Maloula in the Damascus countryside and the sabotage of churches and houses.
“In several letters sent already, we stressed that the Syrian Arab Republic is facing a barbarian war launched by extremist takfiri gangs targeting its present and future,” the ministry said.
The ministry said the terrorist extremists attacked the ancient town of Maloula, the only town in the world where the habitants still speak the language of Jesus Christ, on Monday morning, sabotaging churches and civilian houses, also breaking into the St Thecla convent and holding the Mother Superior Pelagia Sayyaf and a number of nuns as hostages.
“This is further proof of the armed terrorist groups' scorn for the religious symbols of other religions and denominations, as was the terrorists' mortar attack on the Great Umayyad Mosque on Saturday which caused the martyrdom of four civilians, including a woman and a child and the injury of 26 others. The terrorists also destroyed recently several religious shrines in Aleppo city,” the ministry said.
"Given these facts, we call on the Security Council to condemn these terrorist acts in the strongest terms, and we call on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and exert pressure on the countries which are supporting these groups to stop providing them with logistical and financial support,” the ministry added.
