Razan Zeithouneh Kidnapped in Douma

The Local Coordination Committee in Douma in Damascus countryside said Tuesday that prominent human rights activist Razan Zeitouneh was kidnapped along with four other activists from the Violations and Documentation Center (VDC).

The team were attacked at their offices in Douma by an armed group and taken to an unknown location, the Committee said.
Wael Hamada, Zeithouneh’s husband, along with Nazem Hamadi, and Samira Khalil, the wife of Yassin Haj Saleh, the famous Syrian dissident were all kidnapped.

The Local Coordination Committees condemned the kidnap in a statement.

Some activists said they believed the Islamist group Liwa al-Islam, who control Douma were behind the kidnap after they had threatened Zeitouneh and because of the way the group has managed the city’s affairs.

Zeitouneh is a lawyer and activist, who has previously received international awards for her human rights work.

She had recently moved to the liberated areas in Eastern Ghouta, where she managed the VDC.
