The arrest of a militia commander affiliated with Assad's Army by military security has sparked outrage in the Druze stronghold of the Sweida province, source said.
Nabil Ghabra, commander of the National Defence Forces, a pro-Assad militia, was arrested in Qraya town, the birthplace of the historical Syrian nationalist figure, Sultan Pacha al-Atrash, who led the Syrian Revolution from 1925–1927.
National Defense Force militants have threatened to cease their alignment with Assad's forces and declared rebellion in Sweida.
Sweida has witnessed several pro-democracy protests since the Syrian uprising erupted in March 2011. While the movement remains marginal, it is charged with symbolism due to the revolt of 1925.
