People’s Assembly Begins Discussing General Elections Bill

The People’s Assembly has begun discussing the general elections bill and withdrew a bill amending the real estate fees law to the government for further study.

During a session chaired by Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham on Monday, the Assembly’s Financial Committee and the Interior and Local Administration Committee said the bill on real estate fees does not achieve social justice, as it increases fees for real estate sales threefold, regardless of location or the occupants’ financial conditions.

The committees said this bill would slow down economic activity in the country which is already stagnant, and that it doesn’t provide significant income for the state treasury, adding that there are better ways to provide income through tax reform.

The Assembly also began discussing the bill on the general elections law which will update the current law to take into account the new constitution and include new and detailed provisions on the presidential elections.
