Baath Leader Arrested After Criticizing Security Services in Sweida

Bassam Saab delivered a speech at a meeting of the branch, criticizing the media discourse of the regime, the practices of security forces and the inheritance of power

Dissidents in Sweida have issued a statement calling for the release of the elected Baath party branch member, Bassam Saab, who was arrested by security forces after delivering a speech at a meeting of the branch, criticizing the media discourse of the regime, the practices of security forces and the inheritance of power.

His comrades interrupted his speech, preventing him from completing it, then assaulted and expelled him from the venue. The security forces later arrested him, despite intervention from the secretary of the branch who tried to prevent his arrest.

"There is a Baathist stream in Sweida that proves day after day its sincerity and commitment to the country, not to the authorities, to a thought, not to a security state, and we strive to meet them wherever they are, because we are conscious and convicted that we breathe the same air and we will either suffocate or live together," a statement of Sweida dissidents said.

"The man was arrested on the basis of his opinion and is now in the grip of the security services. We condemn the arrest of Bassam Saab and any other arrest above the law and on the grounds of political views and call for his immediate release. Freedom for Bassam Saab, for us and for Syria."
