Dates, Beverage Prices Soar Prior to Ramadan

Al-Watan investigation reveals traders sell poor quality products at inflated prices

Dates and beverages constitute the main diet of people fasting during the time of Ramadan. Opportunistic traders are well aware of how to exploit people's need to buy these products, often selling poor quality goods at unreasonable prices.

On the eve of Ramadan, Al-Watan investigated the types of dates and drinks offered in all major markets, at stalls, in stores, and sellers in poor neighborhoods. In luxurious stores, canned dates from the United Arab Emirates are sold at a price of 3,000 SYP per kilo.

In regular stores, canned dates are sold at prices ranging between 600 SYP to 1,500 SYP per kilo.

Countless types of canned high quality natural juices are also sold at prices ranging 500 SYP to 1,500 SYP per liter, while powdered beverages are sold at prices ranging between 50-100 SYP per bag.
