Muaz al-Khatib Backs Down: ‘I’m Going to Riyadh Conference’

Former president of the Syrian National Coalition Muaz al-Khatib announced his intention to attend the upcoming Syrian opposition conference in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Wednesday, December 9.

In a post on Khatib’s Facebook page on Monday, the opposition figure wrote: "After consultations and contacts with the brothers at home and abroad – politicians, civilians and military personnel – I have decided to participate in the Riyadh conference."

Khatib expressed his regret to those he had let down over the decision to attend the conference, saying: "I received an official invitation to attend the conference, but I apologized."

Saudi Arabia has invited representatives of the Coalition and other opposition blocs, in addition to armed opposition factions, to talks in the capital in an effort to unify the Syrian opposition.
