The U.S. State Department has called on leaders in the region to stop funding and recruiting for the Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist organizations the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) and the Nusra Front and to curb the flow of foreign fighters to Syria.

In a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Monday, the State Department said many of the foreign fighters who go to Syria end up carrying out terrorist attacks in Iraq.

The statement accused ISIS of recent terrorist attacks in Iraq, saying that the group is an offshoot of Al-Qaeda which is a mutual enemy of the U.S. and Iraq and poses a threat to the whole Middle East.

Recently, Amnesty International issued a report confirming that ISIS is responsible for abduction, torture and murder of detainees in secret jails it established and called Turkey and Arab Gulf countries to curb the arming of this group.
