The Syrian Coalition rejets remarks made by Haytham al-Maleh against Russian and Iranian civilians

In a response to remarks made recently by Haytham al-Maleh, a senior member of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces regarding targeting civilian Russian and Iranian citizens, the NC issued a statement Wednesday condemning these remarks and confirming that they do not represent the Coalition.

The statement did not name Mr. al-Maleh, however.

The statement, a copy of which was obtained by the Syrian Observer, said that “at the same time as the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces condemns the policies and practices of the Russian government and its stand in support of the Assad regime politically and militarily, it unequivocally states that the Russian government alone bears full responsibility of their actions without any blame to Russian civilians.”

The National Coalition highlighted in the statement that such remarks do not represent the Coalition and are “completely rejected based on the principles of the Syrian revolution, its ethical standards, interests and policies.”

The statement added that the Syrian Revolution and the National Coalition, being the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people condemns any attack on innocent civilians, regardless of their citizenship.

“We further reject all statements that promote the targeting of civilian Russians and reaffirm that these statements contradict the goals of the Coalition and principles and morals of the revolution and Syrian people,” the statement concluded.

Mr. al-Maleh, 82, is a controversial opposiiton veteran figure. In July, he told reporters that he has been asked by the The council of Syrian revolutionary trustees with forming a government in exile based in Cairo.

"I have been tasked with leading a transitional government," al-Maleh said, adding that he will begin consultations "with the opposition inside and outside" the country.

He said he was named by a Syrian coalition of "independents with no political affiliation".

Al-Maleh is a human rights lawyer who spent many years jailed in Syria. He was released shortly ebfore the uprising began last year, after Assad declared an amnesty for prisoners over 70 years old.
