A speaker of the People’s Assembly has called on the international community to unite in the face of the terrorism across the Middle East to avoid further genocide.
During a parliament session on Tuesday, Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham and the MPs commemorated the centenary of the Armenian genocide, perpetrated by Ottoman Turks against the Armenian people on April 24, 1915.
The Ottoman massacres claimed the lives of over 1.5 million Armenians, and displaced more than 1.5 million others.
While expressing Syria’s absolute solidarity with the Armenian people at home and abroad, Laham lashed out at the current Turkish government – led by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) – for continuing its support to armed terrorist organizations fighting in Syria.
Ankara has often been accused of supporting terrorists by harboring, training, arming, funding and facilitating their passage into Syrian territory since the outset of the crisis in 2011.
In March 2014, the Turkish military is said to have launched an attack firing tank and artillery shells on the Armenian-populated border town of Kassab, Lattakia, to secure coverage for armed terrorist groups to enter into Syria from Turkish land.
