Syria Shoots Down Israeli Warplane, Drone in Quneitra

The Syrian army general command announced on Tuesday that Israel’s air force attacked a Syrian military position in the countryside of the southern Quneitra province shortly after midnight on September 13, 2016.

The general command said in a statement that Syrian air forces responded to the attack and shot down an Israeli warplane to the southwest of Quneitra and an Israeli drone to the west of Sasa town in the southwestern countryside of Damascus.

In a statement to the UN, The Syrian Foreign Ministry said it considered the recent Israeli aggression as “a desperate attempt to boost the deteriorating morale of the terrorist organizations after the losses inflicted upon them by the Syrian army in Quneitra Countryside and across Syria.

The ministry noted that the Israeli aggressions came within the framework of the strategic alliance between Israel and the armed terrorist groups, especially Nusra Front.

It added that Syria demands the UN take all procedures stipulated in the UN Charter to punish Israel for its offenses, forcing it to halt its aggression and immediately suspend its support to terrorists.

The ministry added that it is not possible for some UN Security Council members, who have adopted defending Israel as a principle, to ignore the serious threat posed by the Israeli alliance with Nusra Front terrorist organization.

Note from The Syrian Observer

The Israeli government has denied the Syrian military’s claims to have downed an Israeli warplane and drone over southwest Syria Tuesday morning.

The general command of Syria’s armed forces said in a statement that the incident occurred at 1:30 am local time Tuesday (6:30 pm ET Monday), after Israeli warplanes attacked a Syrian army position in Quneitra, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
