School Director, Students Arrested for Interrogation

The regime’s intelligence services arrested a school director in the city of Qudsaya, countryside of Damascus, in addition to a number of the city’s residents, for interrogation regarding the assassination of the Mufti of Damascus and its countryside, Sheikh Mohammad Adnan al-Afyouni.

Sowt al-Asima’s correspondent said that the Political Security patrols arrested the Director of the al-Sahaba Sharia School, Nazir al-Baraki, who was close with Afyouni, along with 30 young men, most of them Afyouni’s students, and took them to the Political Security branch in Mezzeh.

The correspondent added that the arrests were mostly in the vicinity of the al-Sahaba Mosque and the al-Sahaba School on the outskirts of the city, indicating that temporary checkpoints were set up in a number of neighborhoods, and passersby had to undergo security checks.

National sources stated that the arrest of these persons came as a “routine” procedure for the purpose of interrogating them about the assassination of Afyouni, especially since some had direct contact with him.

On Monday, the Political Security patrols arrested nine young men from Qudsaya, on the grounds of being linked to the assassination of Afyouni, and the Political Security summoned the head of the Qudsaya reconciliation committee, Adel Mesto, who was interrogated for several hours before they released him.

Sheikh Mohammad Adnan al-Afyouni was killed on Oct. 22, 2020, when an explosive device went off in his car. Afyouni was traveling with one of his students and Mesto when the incident took place near the al-Sahaba Mosque, leading to Afyouni’s immediate death.

While Mesto survived, he was slightly injured and transferred to hospital, where his health condition stabilized in the hours after the incident.
