Scholars Denounce Bombings of Religious Sites

The Front Of Sham Scholars issued a statement denouncing what it described as "the heresy of digging Muslim graves and bombing them", stressing that such acts were sacrilegious. The Front explained that "Prophet Mohammad – peace be upon him – said that graves should be even, he did not say they should be dug or bombed. Going so far as forbidding these acts".

This comes just days after the bombing of the tomb of al-Imam an-Nawawi in the countryside of Daraa, followed by the storming of the mosque and school of al-Kaltawiyah in old Aleppo, and destroying the tomb of Sheikh Mohammed an-Nabhan and digging up the graves of his family after midnight last Saturday, according to activists reports.

The Nusra Front and Ansar ad-Din Front stormed al-Kaltawiyah after a statement was signed by the Sharia Court in Aleppo and its Countryside, the Islamic Front, Fajr ash-Sham Islamic Movement and the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice allowing the demolition of graves in mosques, as they are considered signs of "heresy".

The statement of the Front Of Sham Scholars also stressed that the tomb of al-Imam an-Nawawi was not raised above ground and there was no dome over it, noting that the Ottoman architecture used to involve the construction of a mosque, a Muslim cemetery and a school – which proves that the grave was not inside the mosque, and the yard was not part of the construction.
