Sabbagh and Pedersen Address Regional Crisis and Humanitarian Efforts for Refugees from Lebanon

Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Minister Bassam Sabbagh met on Sunday with United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, to discuss the evolving crisis in the region and Syria’s response to the influx of refugees arriving from Lebanon.

The discussions were centred on the deteriorating regional situation caused by ongoing Israeli aggression against Syria and Lebanon, which has compelled hundreds of thousands to flee their homes in search of safety.

Responsabilities of the UN

Minister Sabbagh highlighted the extensive measures undertaken by the Syrian government to address this pressing humanitarian emergency, despite Syria’s severe challenges. He emphasized that these challenges are exacerbated by the continued imposition of unilateral, coercive, and illegal measures by the United States and the European Union, which have deepened the suffering of the Syrian people.

Sabbagh also called on the United Nations to fulfill its responsibilities in halting the violations and crimes committed by the Israeli entity, including its repeated attacks on Syrian territory.

In response, Pedersen acknowledged the Syrian government’s efforts and the facilities provided to refugees arriving from Lebanon. He reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to respecting Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.
