Russia Supports Syrian Army as Only Ground Force Against Terrorism: Mikdad

Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad said that Russia is committed to the principles of the United Nations and international law, and there is no concern over any initiative it may propose for ending the crisis in Syria.

In an interview with al-Mayadeen TV on Saturday evening, Mikdad said that Russia is providing support to the Syrian army, as it is the only force on the ground in Syria that is active in fighting terrorism, noting that even Washington and Riyadh are aware of this reality.

The deputy FM stressed that Syrian-Russian relations are deep-rooted, and that Russian military support is part of long-standing and existing agreements, adding that the recent increase is due to the growing challenges imposed on Syria by the West.

Reiterating Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem’s remarks, Mikdad said presently there is no joint Syrian-Russian combat activity on Syrian ground, noting that it is natural for any country facing dangers to ask for assistance from its friends and allies.

Mikdad also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is committed to the unity of Syria’s land and people, and to support it against terrorism, noting the president is also against any foreign interference in countries’ internal affairs.

The US and its regional pawns, especially Saudi Arabia, have invested in terrorism and sought spread it, the deputy minister said, but the efforts have backfired, noting terrorism has already begun to strike in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and elsewhere in the world.

Mikdad questioned the effectiveness of the alliance against ISIS over the course of a year, asserting that Western states lack seriousness in fighting terrorism.
