Russia says U.N. Statement on Qusayr ‘Untimely’

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich, said on Monday that the British initiative to issue a U.N. Security Council statement on events in the Syrian city of Qusayr was untimely.

"[It] can hardly be called timely and it is impossible for Russia to accept such move," Lukasevich said.

He said the Syrian army is completing a counterterrorist operation against armed groups, including the Nusra Front, who have controlled the town since last February, and who were terrorizing the population.

“In this context, the U.K. called for issuing a statement by the U.N. Security Council. Basically, it demanded that the Syrian military cease fire unilaterally and give the bandits, who are surrounded in several districts, a chance to get out,” he said.

“Russia can not agree with this position. We stated our disagreement and the draft was not passed,” the spokesman added.

“The idea that the international community should raise its concerns at a time when the Syrian army is completing a counterterrorist operation against armed groups who have been terrorizing the population in the Syrian border town for several months can hardly be called timely,” Lukashevich said.
