Opinion: The American-Israeli Silence is Not Weakness

I do believe the current US administration's policy on Syria is not a sign of weakness or reluctance, as alleged by some, but rather a long term goal the administration is trying to achieve in Syria with the lowest possible human and financial cost, especially after their heavy losses in Afghanistan and Iraq.

History will remember Obama not only as the first black US president, but also as the president who pushed America’s adversaries to enter an unwinnable war at practically no cost to Washington and Tel Aviv. Takfiri organizations were gathered in Syria, and thousands of Al-Qaeda and Islamic State members arrived to the country in full view of American and Israeli intelligence. The war was prolonged and transformed into a sectarian war while the Americans and Israelis turned a blind eye to the interference of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, Hassan Nasrallah's Hezoballah militias and Iranian-backed Iraqi militias. Despite their hostility towards the US and Israel, these actors were used to start a sectarian war in Syria between these militias and the takfiri groups.

The American-Israeli silence was not out of powerlessness or unwillingness. Israel has observed events in Syria since the beginning and has done nothing about Nasrallah's arrogance or his militia’s incursion in Syria, except when edging too close to its borders. The US also failed to object when ISIS and Al-Qaeda members began sneaking into Syria and Iraq until they became the main two opposition forces on the battlefield.

The Syrian disaster will not end during Obama's administration. The beginning of the end will have to wait in order to know the desires of the new administration, if the US had achieved its goals in Syria and if the destruction in Syria was enough for the Israelis.

This will be the situation unless all Syrians regain their awareness and realize that lining up against each other and supporting the tyrant Assad or his enemies will only serve their own enemies.
