The Syrian regime is working to form a political opposition coalition in Damascus made up of the so called 'tolerated opposition' with the aim of including it in talks based on the 2012 Geneva communique towards forming a transition government.
On 2 May, a group of opposition parties announced the establishment of 'The Coalition of Peaceful Change', consisting of the People's Will Party, headed by Qadri Jamil, the Syrian Socialist National Party, headed by Ali Haidar, the Third Movement for Syria Party, headed by Mazen Maghribieh, the Peaceful Change Movement, headed by Fateh Mohammad Jamous and the Marxist Democratic Assembly, headed by Nayef Salloum, in addition to the National Workers' Movement and the People's Commitees of Deir ez-Zor, Gunaynes and Amouda.
The Third Movement party, led by Maghribieh held a press conferenceWednesday inviting all peaceful opposition groups, known as the Ali Mamlouk Front, to join together to in a peaceful opposition coalition calling for radical and comprehensive, peaceful and democratic change in Syria.
In a statement read to the press, the movement said the invitation is "addressed to all peaceful opposition groups opposing violence and rejecting foreign intervention, and Islamisation.
The National Coordination Committee will form the core component of the group, the statement said, alongside the Building the State Movement, the Coalition of Peaceful Change and other parties or movements representing independent oppositionists, the Local Coordination Committees and the armed forces, all of which believe in the danger and futility of militarization and advocate a political solution to resolve the crisis and end violence in Syria.
