In the face of being targeted by U.S.-led coalition warplanes, teachers in the countryside of Raqqa have reopened their classroom doors during the past few weeks, despite the destruction of school buildings.
The Ibn Rushd Elementary School in the village of Al-Salhabiya al-Sharqiya in Raqqa’s western countryside received local children after years of closure during the rule of the Islamic State (ISIS).
Young people from the village began teaching classes through an individual initiative more than a month and a half ago despite the damaged buildings, even amid a complete absence of council help. The volunteers used a damaged school to begin teaching classes despite the lack of teaching assistance and equipped classrooms.
The Democratic Union Party (PYD) has conducted one-month training for around 24 teachers from Raqqa in the village of Tel Habash in order to prepare them for the coming school year in Al-Tabaqa and Ayn Issa.
Pro-PYD sources said the teachers had been trained in women's history, women's science, the history of Syria, the revolution of Rojava, the sociology of freedom, amongst other things.
