Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Muallim told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that Syria has a right to respond to Israeli aggression under international law, during a phone call Monday.
Muallim and Lavrov discussed the volatile regional situation following a series of strikes against military facilities early Sunday in Damascus and Damascus countryside.
Describing the strikes as "criminal," Muallim told his Russian counterpart that the attacks proved a common agenda between Israel and armed terrorist groups operating in Syria.
He said Israel, along with its allies in the U.S. and Europe were complicit in spilling Syrian blood, encouraging violence and terrorism, with the aim of weakening Syria and undermining its regional and international role.
Muallimsaid Syria has the right to respond to Israeli aggression under international law and the U.N. charter.
Lavrovre affirmed Russia's commitment to seeing stability in Syria, voicing concern over the Israel's violation of Syria's sovereignty. He also warned developments risked uncontrollable regional instability.
Lavrov also briefed Muallim on communiqués issued by Russia demanding a halt to acts contributing to the deterioration of security in the region as a result of the Israeli strikes, adding that international and regional efforts are needed to prevent an escalation of tensions.
