The Islamic State group on Sunday announced it had brought down an Assad regime warplane in the city of Deir-ez-Zor.
ISIS’s Amaq news agency reported that it had brought down a Russian-made MiG aircraft belonging to the Assad regime air force using anti-aircraft weapons. Pages and websites close to the Assad regime confirmed that the MiG warplane had gone down above Jabal Tharada in Deir-ez-Zor, and confirmed the death of Colonel Ali Hamza, the plane’s pilot.
The group took control of Jabal Tharada which overlooks the Deir-ez-Zor military airbase after raids carried out by American warplanes struck Syrian army positions in the area, killing more than 85 soldiers and wounding more than 115 in the Assad forces’ ranks.
