Informed journalist sources revealed that Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa recently asked President Bashar Assad to allow him to seek exile in Morocco.
The decision was reportedly made a few days after Assad excluded Sharaa from the National Leadership of ruling Baath Party in Syria.
Behind the News, a Moroccan newspaper first reported the news, saying that Sharaa had discussed the idea of taking refuge in the North African Kingdom with Assad after the party leadership reshuffle and amid a tense security situation in Syria.
The newspaper said Assad's brother, Maher Assad, welcomed the idea, but that Assad himself refused violently, first because of the idea of voluntary exile and secondly because of the diplomatic tensions between Syria and Morocco since the outbreak of Syrian uprising in 2011.
