Activists claim at least 300 fighters from the city of Homs participated in the battle to liberate Idleb under the banner of the Fatah Army, an alliance of militant Islamist groups, seizing the city on Saturday for the first time since the beginning of Syria's civil war.
Activist Mahmood Dabool told Zaman al-Wasl that 300 fighters from Homs participated in the battle of Idleb, including the commander of the Sunni Army along with other leaders.
Dabool said 13 fighters from Homs were killed with 25 others wounded in the battle, while fighting under the Sunni Army brigade.
The Sunni Army consists of the Farouq Battalion from Baba Amr as well as a number of battalions from Homs. Activists documented the names of seven fighters from Homs who were killed in the fighting.
Activists posted footage online reportedly showing the bodies of dozens of detainees executed by Syrian military hours before the humiliating defeat at the hands of the rebels.
The Sunni Army’s headquarters was located at the Camp for Liberating Homs with the al-Iman battalion, Dabool said. The group recently announced their merger to form the Fatah Army, a group of militant Islamist factions responsible for the liberation of Idleb city.
The alliance included Al-Qaeda's the Nusra Front, the hardline Ahrar al-Sham movement and Jund al-Aqsa.
Radical Islamist groups are now in control of a second province after ISIS previously took the city of Raqqa,.
