Commander with the Liwaa al-Tawhid brigade in Aleppo, Adnan Bakkur, was killed in a car bomb by Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) near the infantry school, north of Aleppo, sources told Zaman Al-Wasl.
ISIS militants seized parts of the military base after fierce clashes with the main Islamic Front brigade, Liwa al-Tawhid, which took control of the base in December 2012.
Nearly 1,400 people have been killed in clashes between rebel forces and the jihadists with ISIS this month, AFP reported.
“The number of people killed in fighting between the ISIS and rebel forces since January 3 has risen to 1,395,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
Clashes between rebels and jihadists from ISIS erupted early in January after months of rising tensions.
Days ago, ISIS said it had never rejected Sheikh al-Muhsayni's proposal for reconciliation, so-called the “Umma Initiative” but it had asked questions prior to any agreement.
The Umma Initiative was launched by Saudi preacher Abdullah bin Mohammed al-Moheisini last Thursday. It called for an “immediate ceasefire in all parts of Syria” with agreement from “all groups present in the Syrian arena.”
