Iran Builds New Missile Facility Near Damascus

The new missile facility will bolster Iran’s presence in Syria and increase the pressure on Israel reports Zaman Al Wasl.

A well-informed military source told Zaman al-Wasl that Iran is building a new missile facility near Damascus, in a base controlled by Maher al-Assad, Bashar’s brother, and the de-facto commander of the elite Fourth Armored Division.

The construction of secret hangars has begun under the supervision of Iranian military experts.

Iran seeks to produce and develop its mobile short-range ballistic missile, Burkan-2H, or Volcano-2H. Also, to produce Golan missiles, according to the source.

The last version of the Golan 1000 features a 450 kg shell.

Fresh satellite images of the Iranian site, northwest of Damascus, showed the construction of long hangars.

Maher al-Assad, contrary to his brother, has showed a blind loyalty to Iran, with most of its military personnel and allied militias, especially Hezbollah, under the protection of the Fourth Division in Syria.

The Assad regime have started the construction of missile facilities, which were hit by Israel in 2018.

A quick rehabilitation and reconstruction process is under underway in the base of Sheikh Ghadban village, north of Mesyaf town, the military source told Zaman al-Wasl.

Both Iran and Hezbollah use the base.

Israel launched wild-scale airstrikes in 2018, targeting over 50 Iranian sites in the war-torn country.

Israel wants to prevent by all means the existence of a “Shiite corridor” linking “Tehran to Damascus,” top Israeli officials say.

Also, an Iranian facility, which had been destroyed by Israeli airstrikes last May near Damascus International Airport, was reconstructed.

The warehouse was the Iranian headquarters at the airport.

The Israeli strikes were the largest air operation in Syria for over 40 years, and came in response to an Iranian rocket barrage that targeted the occupied Golan Heights. Israel warned that it would not tolerate Tehran’s attempts to entrench itself militarily on Israel’s northern border, according to The Times of Israel.

The Iranian regime spends an average of 10-12 billion dollars in Syria annually, while the annual support afforded by the government to Iranian citizens is approximately 8 billion dollars, reports say.
