The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Moscow on Wednesday, insisting on the need to halt violence in the country and start dialogue.
Lavrov said communications with international partners was ongoing to ensure the peace conference, as agreed by Russia and the U.S, went ahead, along with the subsequent national dialogue. But, he said some parties were attempting to sabotage the initiative.
Mekdad said Syria appreciated the constructive efforts by Russia to solve the crisis and put an end to the violence by working towards the national dialogue.
Mekdad described the meeting with Lavrov as "successful and constructive."
"There is a strong will by the Syrian leadership to end violence and bloodshed, via the political program presented by President Bashar Assad, which says there should be no preconditions for dialogue," he said.
